Telegraph Hill – SE14
Nestled between New Cross Gate and Brockley sits Telegraph Hill.  It’s name comes from the Napoleonic wars when the Admiralty used a Semaphore Telegraph system as a faster means to communicate to its fleet on the South Coast.  The area was later bought by the Haberdashers’ Company who began developing the area.  The houses built were to a standardised design, and almost all the roads you see now – Pepys, Jerningham, Erlanger etc. conform to the standard.  The Haberdashers’ Company provided a church, schools and open spaces for their tenants.  During the 20^th century they sold off the estates to private owners yet the area still remains a testament to the best of Victorian Development.
