Peckham – SE15
One mile west of Camberwell and one mile east of New Cross lies the area of Peckham.  Probably an Anglo Saxon word, Peckham  means ‘village among the hills’.  The area developed its strong sense of identity in the 19^th century when Rye Lane was one of the most important shopping areas in South London.  A traditional working class community now coexists with communities that have their origins from all over the world making it one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the UK.  More recently state funding is being provided to improve the housing stock and renovate the streets.
